The volcano Kerinci has been more active lately, but hike up this volcano was still relatively safe, though sometimes you may not hike any further than certain km from the crater / central eruption.Activity level of volcano Kerinci could change anytime, and weather up there also could change in very short time anytime. It need to study the eruption character plus potential hazard before trip, need a patience and flexibility, well equipped, trail risk assessment-trek management and tactical volcano summit approach to tackle the summit trail. No technical progression along the way up-down, you just need to walk plus do little scramble along some short sections of summit trail.Spend one day at Kersi Tuo prior to hike commencement is important to gather relevant info, adapt to local environment and observe the last condition of the volcano.
SITUATION ON SUMMIT:
On summit, the wind was howling and blowing sulfur direct toward summit, caused the gas sulfur was overwhelming on summit zone in the morning. The temper was cold, so that we had to keep moving slowly, but sulfur fume anywhere that made our visibility distance was too short to move forward further from jugged lip of the crater to ward marked summit.
WALK DOWN BEFORE SUMMITING:
We decided to walk down to lower and more protected site, wait for better situation. When the situation got better, we then hop up again some meters toward marked summit and When the sun slowly began to light the summit zone, we then could see longer rim of crater from marked summit, but below crater vent as well as below valley and volcano landscape plus other view such view of Gunung Tuju caldera lake were invisible due to bad weather and sulfur fume.
FOGGY, STOP AND WAIT:
There was no need to spend much time on summit, we just take limited of pics, did shake hand with other hikers, have drink and snack for our carbo needs for the descent. We then made the way down, and when the morning fog were coming up we then made stop, strive to be patient and under control .When the situation got better, we then walk further down again heads for Tugu Yudha, then shelter 3.When arrived at Tugu Yudha, we made photo stops and took in view of summit zone over us. The wind blowing the sulfur fume change in short time.
Shelter 3 was still windy on our arrival, and the cloud came up closer to our campsite so that view of Gunung Tuju lake was invisible. We have our breakfast at shelter 3, then decide to pack the tent and sleeping bag plus other hiking items then carried them down with us.Upon arrival at entrance gate in afternoon, the rain began to fall for around 1 hours. On next day morning, there was rain again in the early morning. The road still wet in the morning and the weather was fogy at village Kersi Tuo , so that the cone of volcano Kerinci was invisible as well as the green view of local tea plantation.
