Administratively, volcano Lawu covers wide area of two provinces : Central Java and East Java.To hike to the top, Lawu provides some headtrails either via Central Java or East Java, but popular ones are Cemoro Sewu, Cemoro Kandang, and Cetho. Below are two trekking approach for volcano Lawu :
1. Trekking Up - Down Route Cemoro Sewu:
provides well maintained cobbled path making the hike much easier done through mountain forest and sub alpin ecosystem heading for Hargo Dumilah, the highest peak of Lawu. It route is scenic landscape overlooking " parade " of east java volcanic highland, as well as below lake. So far, the locals and officers are very welcome. My guiding day trekking approach in the area normally take 2 days / 1 Night, pick up service in the morning from Yogyakarta or Solo, and have 1 night camp by tent on volcano. I strongly suggest to my trekking / hiking / climbing guest to have at least 1 night rest at accommodation in Yogyakarta or Solo prior to departure day to Cemoro Sewu (+- 1800 m).
2. Trekking down Route Cetho:
This route provides more discovery of historical / cultural element of Lawu volcano. Let's you get insight about archeological remain en route reflecting past Javanese culture history in the area. To completely experiences this volcanic highland, guiding day approach take 2 days / 1 night, covers a visit to at least 3 temples: Ketek,Cetho,and Suku.The hike is commenced from Cemoro Sewu or Cemoro Kandang to peak by 1 night overnight en route at available camp site.Hike down via Cetho route where you have chance to discover Kethek and Cetho Temples, also has the chance to stopover at Suku temple en route back down to Solo or Yogyakarta.
